The BIPT Licensing department grants the licences that are required in accordance with Article 39 of the Act of 13 June 2005 for the use of private radio networks and individual radio stations.

On the basis of those licences, it is possible to check whether the network is in accordance with the Act and has the appropriate authorisation. They guarantee optimal use of the frequency spectrum by giving radio communication the highest possible quality.

Licensed radio stations and networks are divided into six categories, in accordance with their destination and the manner in which they operate (Article 4 of the Royal Decree of 18 december 2009 on private radio communications and user rights for fixed networks and trunked networks).

Transmiiters always have to respect certain technical parameters, nevertheless, certain transmitters or receivers are exempted from a licence.

The Licensing department also grants the licences for radio equipment on board aircraft (after acceptance by the Federal Public Service Mobility and Transport, Directorate-General Air Transport) and vessels.
